Logo Design

The project needs a logo, and I have it figured out. The problem is that it requires some nice, looping handwriting. Almost in a Walt Disney-signature style.

So that is where you guys come in. This is a charity project, but I can swing $20 for someone with nice writing to write in looping letters, fit for a neon sign.

The words are the following in the exact case:

The Backdoor POKER Society

This is a non-profit charity project, but I can swing $20 for someone’s nice handwriting so I can trace it and rework it as the logo for the project. Of course you’ll also be acknowledged for your contribution. The logo itself consists of more than just the words, but it requires a looping scrawl that I know I am just not capable of.

Please retweet, reblog, or share. Send your handwritten examples to hpkomic@gmail.com and I’ll pay $20 to the entry I ultimately go with.

Talk Wiki to Me

Might be a good idea to explain the significance of the wiki in regards to The Backdoor Poker Society now.

The wiki serves two important purposes. First of all, it is a form of permission slip, indicating that creators want their characters involved in the crossover project for charity purposes. As such, the only characters who can make appearances in the comic are ones who are on the wiki. This keeps things fair to everyone and keeps the focus on characters who have been especially chosen by the creators for their crossover potential.

There is no currently planned limit to how many characters a creator can put on a wiki, but that may change over time. Additionally, certain roles may need to be established within the wiki. Some characters may just end up being barflys, or diners, or observers. Not every character might end up at the table. Typically the table requires certain vibrant personalities that play well off others. Of course there’s no reason why multiple characters from the same comic can’t show up in the club. We’re simply trying to avoid somewhat cliquey situations where a number of strips focus on characters from a single comic.

The second purpose of the wiki is to provide an all-encompassing resources for the creation of comics including art components, fonts and graphics. Additionally, it will serve as the primary stop for creators who want to get involved through detailed character listings. This will require things such as small biographies, writing notes, reference images, and links to comics that help inform the personality of the character. A well-kept wiki article on your potential character is the biggest contributor toward getting your character to show up in the comics.

Simply said, the wiki is how you pitch you characters to show up in the comics. The stronger the case you make, the better your chances. Of course this doesn’t mean creators can’t throw in their favorite characters into their strips, but this seems to be a good way to make a more even ground for characters to be included.

So… that’s where my thoughts are about wikis for The Backdoor Poker Society.

tl;dr version: It’s a permission form for character usage and resource for art and writing elements.

The Comics

One thing that I feel like I may haven’t explained in enough detail is the comic process. I hinted at it at the main concept post, but I thing it’d be beneficial to expand on that here.

Simply said, anyone can contribute comics, with any characters on the wiki, in just about any format. The only things that are required are the club setting, and the fact that these are crossover comics. There is no over-arching plot.

So, how is the process going to work?

  1. To start, find some characters you like from the wiki. The wiki is essentially a one-stop resource for characters to use. By creating a character page on the wiki (more details on this later) you are essentially signing permission for contributors to use the character in The Backdoor Poker Society. Once again, this is non-profit, so you do not need to worry about people making money on your IP. If you feel you might be going in a direction the creator of the character does not want, simply get a hold of them to discuss it.
  2. Once you have some characters and a comic idea… just produce it. You draw the characters interacting around the poker table, or at the bar, or hanging around the club. They can interact with the club staff, the owner, Greenbot, or whatever sort of things can lead to interesting character interactions in this multiversal-space. Additionally, I am going to build a library of resources such as high resolution backgrounds and different “shots” to where all you have to do is draw in characters. Fonts and color keys for the club will be available too.
  3. Once the comic is done, simply submit it (the method of which is TBD) and it will be posted and tagged appropriately. From there share, reblog, retweet, whatever. Pull people to the site, up the ad revenue, and help whatever charity we are working with at the time.

Content-wise, there are currently NO age limitations, as we’ll be using tags for comics, so you should be able to filter out the NSFW comics from the SFW ones. Naturally at a bar and poker-table conversations can get a little blue, and that’s the whole point. This is an opportunity for characters to cut loose, and interact with other characters they normally would not. The poker is not the important device. It’s just a means to and end to get a bunch of disparate characters around a table and to shoot the shit.

While I am positive the vast majority of comics will be single pages, or strips, long form story arcs may happen too, or maybe even some impromptu jams between creators within the project, and that’s fine. We’ll make sure to make any communication channels available that need to be there to facilitate these things.

Hopefully this clears up what the project is looking for… just about anything really.

Any questions? Concerns? Comments?

webcomic comic backdoor poker society pitch charity process

Charity Process

As of yet, a charity has yet to be officially decided, but I don’t want to limit this project to a single charity, thus I am considering what I call a “charity season.”

A charity season is a period of a few months where ad revenue from The Backdoor Poker Society is funneled into a specific charity. At the end of that period, the new season starts, complete with a different target charity. This way we can hit as many charities as we are interested in hitting, and there is always room to come back to other ones if there is interest.

How do you guys feel about this charity season idea?

Currently To-do

For the project to launch there are a number of things that still need to be accomplished. Here is my current list.

  • Design the logo
  • Create the wiki
  • Theme the tumblr
  • Cast the club’s employees
  • Gather/create some example comics
  • Choose a charity (more on this later)
  • Invite creators to get involved

Yeah, got a lot to do. If you’re interested in assisting in any of these areas, please let me know via DM, twitter, or e-mail (hpkomic@gmail.com).

About The Backdoor Poker Society

Here is the general concept behind The Backdoor Poker Society:

Background

The success of Telltale Games’ Poker Night at the Inventory series made me realize that there is a ton of potential in matching characters together from different projects in a sort of off-duty style. So why not have a poker night comic for webcomic authors?

The format is simple enough; The Backdoor Poker Society is a comic strip drawn and written by different creators that brings together various webcomic characters for some nominally friendly games of poker. You don’t even need to know how to play the game. You just need to be able to share character conversations around a table. Ever wanted to see how a character from an action series would interact with a slacker from a gaming comic? This would be your chance! The poker games and the club are just the device for creators to make comics where their characters can interact with others.

Best of all, the comic is designed to support a charity! The charity has yet to be chosen, but there will be plenty of public discussion about it. This comic is not designed to make money off creators, and creators retain the rights to their characters. Please note that the project will thrive based on transparency and communication between creators.

The Setting

A multiverse club known as The Backdoor Poker Society that allows characters from different webcomics to come in for a drink, a bite to eat, and to play poker with other webcomic characters. The multiverse is typically referred to “the backdoor,” as in heading out the backdoor. The club’s pun comes from the owner, Greenbot, who finds it hilarious.

The Rules

Respect the other players.

  • Do not use a character in a way that is inappropriate or disrespectful to the creator of said character.
  • Keep language consistent to what the characters would use, unless this is something discussed prior with the character’s creator.

  • Don’t be a jerk about someone’s work. That’s not the point of this.

We’re just here for the poker.

  • Do not use the comic as a soapbox for stirring up drama with other creators.
  • You don’t need to know how to play poker, just make sure you are writing character-based conversations.

Don’t wreck up the joint.

  • Keep the layout and theme of The Backdoor Poker Club consistent.
  • Keep the house consistent, Greenbot is always the club’s current host.

  • Any changes to club staff or the club environment must be cleared with hpkomic (hpkomic@gmail.com).

Advertising Policy

Ads on the website are meant to be unobtrusive. Ads are not designed to benefit a single entity,  ad-earnings are used to (A) pay for site costs, which will be publicly disclosed. Additionally, (B) leftover earnings will be poured into a charity, which will also be publicly disclosed. If other support options are added, such as Patreon, this policy of transparency and charitable donation will be applied. The charity has yet to be chosen and suggestions are welcome. Charity selection will be updated as it develops.

Casting

The current owner of the The Backdoor Poker Society, Greenbot, has a limited number of slots available for recurring employees. Ideally some lesser known or retired characters in the webcomic world should totally step up. The casting process is secretive, but is rumored to involve chickens, hatchets, and circles of salt.

Currently The Backdoor Poker Society has openings for a bartender, a greeter, a janitor, a waiter/waitress, and at minimum, 3 dealers. The player list will constantly change as more people get involved. Casting announcements will be posted as they occur.

Players

Players will be tied to a wiki that will allow creators to post a character, reference art, and writing notes. The more detailed your wiki entry, they easier it will be to integrate your characters. Screening of characters will be minimal, only enough to ensure a certain level of quality. Users can only contribute characters of their own. The wiki serves as a permission form, confirming you are fine with other people writing and drawing your characters for the project. Only wiki’d characters will be able to make appearances unless special arrangements are made with the character’s creator. More details on the wiki to be announced.

The Comics

Comics are contributed through a submission process, and will be screened fairly for a standard level of quality. We’re not jerks, but this comic idea lives and dies by maintaining a level of quality that inspires others. Characters who show up in the comics must come from characters on the wiki unless previously arranged with the character’s owner. There is no current set rating for content, but any discussion in that manner will be updated accordingly.

This of course, is Greenbot, dapper club host.

All in?

If you are interested in the project, either as a reader or possible contributor, or just someone who is interested in charity, please like, reblog, and comment. You can reach the currently sole operator of the project, David Davis, at his twitter account, his e-mail (hpkomic@gmail.com), or his webcomic, Cosmic Dash.

More announcements will be forthcoming concerning the comic. There is a lot of stuff still to do, but The Backdoor Poker Society can be something great.
